The SkyWay

The thesis began from a technical view point of the energy issue. This problem calls for a switch from the usage of conventional fossil fuel into solar renewable energy.

The evolution for a paradigm shift to solar power provides an opportunity for a new spatial concept within the architectural scene. This thesis focuses on the residential community in the eco precinct of Punggol. Before even going into solar power as an alternative energy source for residence, passive methods are incorporated to
significantly reduce the energy usage first. Considering aircon and other cooling devices are the highest energy guzzlers, the thesis look into strategies to reduce these cooling loads. Other passive strategies include natural day lighting though building orientation and reflecting devices.

To pursue this, a specialized solar canopy system is devised to self generate sufficient energy to meet the demands of a HDB precinct. The potential spaces in between the residential blocks become a perfect space to harness optimum solar energy. The creation of this suspended solar farm canopy cools the residence and the parks from the midday sun. Multi level social activities can occur all day in any weather condition. This intervention also indirectly provides an opportunity to recreate a tight knit communal living. Thus, improving community connectivity by enhancing a singular nodal point.
